The Rutles

I didn't know where else to put this.

Who's heard of this Beatles parody band? They sound near as much like The Beatles themselves. In fact all their songs are their own compositions, well reworked lyrics and melody on most of them anyway. A few others just sound so originally fresh you could fool any fan who's never heard them into thinking they're long lost Beatles songs.

The members.
Ron Nasty (John Lennon)
Dirk McQuickly (Paul McCartney)
Stig O'Hara (George Harrison)
Barrington Womble aka Barry Wom (Ringo Starr)

A Mockumentary was based around it and is well worth watching. Here it is in it's full entirety on youtube.

The Rutles - All You Need Is Cash

Just click the playlist link above and it'll play all 7 parts automatically one after the other. It's around sixty-four minutes long. Worth watching. Paul Simon and Mick Jagger are also in it. Plus George Harrison plays a small cameo role as a grey haired reporter, see if you can spot him

Neil Innes who plays Ron, chief singer/songwriter of "Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band" wrote and sings lead vocals on all the songs except "Living In Hope" sung by Barry Wom. Eric Idle plays Dirk.

I believe every Self-Respecting Beatles fan would automatically become a fan and it's well worth owning the 2 albums, especially the first. I both have the CD albums and their DVD mockumentary. Best tribute band ever.

I've found all the song videos on youtube from the movie plus a couple of others (I've had to upload a few to complete). I've done my best to think what all the songs are parodying, I guess some just sound too freshly original yet still sounds like a classic Beatles song.

Goose-Step Mama (Some Other Guy) [cavern appearance]
Number One (Twist & Shout)
Hold My Hand (I Want To Hold Your Hand/All My Loving)
With A Girl Like You (If I Fell)
I Must Be In Love
Between Us (I'll Be Back)
Ouch! (Help!)
It's Looking Good
Living In Hope (Act Naturally)
Joe Public (Rain)
Doubleback Alley (Penny Lane)
Good Times Roll (Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds)
Nevertheless (Within You Without You)
Piggy In The Middle (I Am The Walrus)
Cheese And Onions (A Day In The Life)
Love Life (All You Need Is Love)
Shangrila (Hey Jude)
Another Day (Martha My Dear)
Let's Be Natural (Dear Prudence)
Get Up And Go (Get Back)

Other Beatle/Rutles song comparisions are welcome.

Perhaps I need a few more listening of the whole show...:? By all means, they are funny (especially the narrator person) and Paul is spot on, John is not too bad, the Ringo sounds very much like Ringo, George... er yea.
They dont look like them one bit, but they sound like them when they dont sing, I find.
I'll give it another listen though.

I really liked Ouch!

thanks for uploading them Sonne! :)

Oh! The nerrator is the same person who does Paul?

i think part the joke is that they don't really look like them, as well as slightly different events and a similar humour. but there are obvious similarities. Genius making George into an indian-like figure lol.

i feel they do sound a lot like The Beatles when they sing myself, and think they sound better than many Beatles tribute bands (rutles are my favourite for being so freshly original although Neil sings all but one of the songs (in reality).

Yes, Eric Idle who plays Dirk also plays the narrator. He also wrote the movie script (if i recall). He is part of the monty python team.

Please give the songs another listen. they're a brilliant homage.

I like The Rutles, I got my Rutles CD signed by Ron Nasty (Neil Innes) at one of his concerts and saw Neil & John (Ron & Barry) in Liverpool doing The Rutles Farewell Tour it was amazing. I love Cheese & Onions
