I hope you will have a listen to these songs I have put on here and you may enjoy some of them and you will get to here songs you may never have heard on the radio , or anywhere, as Folk is not a media friendly music , I always have to be in a certain mood to listen to this stuff and if you sit back relax and enter the wonderful world of Folk .

Folk! I have always loved falk music! [brings memories of home... in a way :) ] I used to do folk dancing when i was younger [so much younger than today... ]

That lot were lovely! You do have to be in a certain mood though... The first one was really nice. I liked River Man [i need to find the lyrics!] and House carpenter too [reminded me of Roy Harper]. Oh but they all are great!

She has a very calming and beautiful voice, Sandy does. Very nice.

:D

Beautiful stuff! I loved the River Man but I can't listen to without going

As for The Hanging Song - Octie and I couldn't find the full lyrics... *hint hint* *nudge nudge*

The nice french-irish little jig - that was cool!

The quiz - Gerry Conway who is the drummer of Ft Convention did session stuff for Paul. Right? [a joint answer from the honey and the octie!]

What is the connection with Sandy Denny, Ft Con and Fotheringay?

Sorry Its not Gerry who did a bit with Pentangle  , but your so close he is a drummer , no longer with Fairport , i`ll let you have one more guess

Sandy Denny , she joined Fairport from another Folk band of the 60s Strawbs , they very same band a Mr Rick Wakeman played with . :)
Then she left Fairport in 1970,and formed her own band Fotheringay , with a certain drummer called Gerry Conway , and they just recorded one album and then she went solo for a bit, recorded Battle For Evermore with Led Zeppelin and then rejoined Fairport for a bit and then , yeh left again , went solo again and then she fell down stairs in her parents cottage and died 4 days later of a brain Heamorrhage at the age of 31 in 1978 .

Folk Rock . 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

BATTLE OF EVERMORE - LED ZEPPELIN .With Sandy Denny .

Zepp meets Lord Of The Rings , listen out for the Rings hints in the song :)

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wHj_fZG8-lU&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wHj_fZG8-lU&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

The Hanging Song Lyrics .

Wake up John, it's time to go Come along John and don't be slow
Come along John, don't be slow Wake up John, it's time to go
Wake up John, it's time to go

A priest joins the procession just to help me kneel
With a warder at my elbow and another at my heel
Marching in the morning down a path I've lately seen
I was sleeping in this garden, am I still within my dream?

The echo of my heartbeat is the beating of a drum
And all the earth is singing with life's sweet hum
We filed in solemn silence, shuffled through a door
The place where life is taken for the letter of the law

(Chorus)
Shake the holy water, summon up the guard
Dying's very easy, waiting's very hard

A rope was hanging from the roof, a sight which puzzles me
I thought a gibbet and a guard would make a gallows tree
But now all is revealed, stamped there is the command
My feet are on the trapdoor with a rope around my hand

And now the executioner is shaking hands with me
"My duty I must carry out, you poor fellow," says he
A strap is tied around my feet and a bag upon my head
And then the noose which separates the living from the dead

(Chorus)

There he whispers to me "Have you anything to say?"
My mouth is dry, my throat is tight, I answer "Drop away"
Silence now surrounds me, my heart is beating on
The trapdoor hardly moves at all, my life is still my own

They stand me in a corner with my hands and feet still bound
While a carpenter is called for and an explanation found
"The rain has warped the timbers," I hear the hangman say
"It's funny but it worked well, I tried it yesterday"

"All is mended now," they say, "your ordeal's nearly over
Your life's as good as ended," but I hear their voices waver
Once more the ?board is shaked? and again I hang in limbo
While the guards jump on the trapdoor and my body stands on tip-toe

(Chorus)

They stand me in a corner with my hands and feet still ties
A warder holds onto the noose, the trapdoor opens wide
Is it magic or coincidence that keeps me on the brink?
It seems to work without me, "Will it kill me now?" I think

"Please, I'm tired of living and I really want to die"
I was taken to the scaffold and I heard the hangman cry
"Lee, I'm truly sorry, forgive these hands of mine"
He drew the bolt and I felt the jolt the third and final time

My life was spared that morning 'cos it wasn't theirs to take
Three's the ?boat? the law requires, a man could feel the stake

(Repeat chorus

Love Folk Me !
And then over a cup of tea
We talked about whatever that came to our heads
That was delightful, I said

Your right Honey/Octie Gerry Conway did play with Macca :D [ sorry i didn`t know he did]
Also Dave Mattacks , Macca liked his Fairport drummers :?
I owe you 2 a prize ! :)

More of the best folk band ever to grace my ears 8)

FAIRPORT CONVENTION - MATTY GROVES . Sang best by Sandy Denny 8)
Now before you play this turn it up, go higher , no really louder ..

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1it7BP5PckI&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1it7BP5PckI&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

The Words . :)

A holiday, a holiday, and the first one of the year.
Lord Darnell's wife came into church, the gospel for to hear.

And when the meeting it was done, she cast her eyes about,
And there she saw little Matty Groves, walking in the crowd.

“Come home with me, little Matty Groves, come home with me tonight.
Come home with me, little Matty Groves, and sleep with me till light.”

“Oh, I can't come home, I won't come home and sleep with you tonight,
By the rings on your fingers I can tell you are Lord Darnell's wife.”

“What if I am Lord Darnell's wife? Lord Darnell's not at home.
For he is out in the far cornfields, bringing the yearlings home.”

And a servant who was standing by and hearing what was said,
He swore Lord Darnell he would know before the sun would set.

And in his hurry to carry the news, he bent his breast and ran,
And when he came to the broad mill stream, he took off his shoes and swam.

Little Matty Groves, he lay down and took a little sleep.
When he awoke, Lord Darnell he was standing at his feet.

Saying “How do you like my feather bed? And how do you like my sheets?
How do you like my lady who lies in your arms asleep?”

“Oh, well I like your feather bed, and well I like your sheets.
But better I like your lady gay who lies in my arms asleep.”

“Well, get up, get up,” Lord Darnell cried, “get up as quick as you can!
It'll never be said in fair England that I slew a naked man.”

“Oh, I can't get up, I won't get up, I can't get up for my life.
For you have two long beaten swords and I not a pocket-knife.”

“Well it's true I have two beaten swords, and they cost me deep in the purse.
But you will have the better of them and I will have the worse.”

“And you will strike the very first blow, and strike it like a man.
I will strike the very next blow, and I'll kill you if I can.”

So Matty struck the very first blow, and he hurt Lord Darnell sore.
Lord Darnell struck the very next blow, and Matty struck no more.

And then Lord Darnell he took his wife and he sat her on his knee,
Saying, “Who do you like the best of us, Matty Groves or me?”

And then up spoke his own dear wife, never heard to speak so free.
“I'd rather a kiss from dead Matty's lips than you and your finery.”

Lord Darnell he jumped up and loudly he did bawl,
He struck his wife right through the heart and pinned her against the wall.

“A grave, a grave!” Lord Darnell cried, “to put these lovers in.
But bury my lady at the top for she was of noble kin.”

Here is a couple rare tracks of Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny

Matty Grove! Lovely lyrics! Ha! It reminds me of an English Folk song I read in some book about how the man and his lady are in bed and want to get it on but the lady says its sunday morn and time to go to church or something like that.
